about

Another older track that was transformed! "Beautiful" actually started as an off the cuff improv in 2012 after the audience screamed "One more song!" at a Seattle concert with talented guitarist Muhammed Shaibu. He started playing 3 chords, and I started singing. The lyrics poured out, and the chorus became the final meaning of the track, a message I feel is ultra important. I have often struggles, like everyone, with body issues and confidence, feeling insecure or "too different" at times growing up as a mixed Italian and African American girl in a mostly White or Hispanic, upscale neighborhood.

This song is a favorite when I perform now, but I wanted to update it to make the message even more clear. I touch on some heavy subjects wrapped in a light, rnb pop groove: cutting, alcoholism, adoption, hate, insecurity, theft, and the worst of all, self-drawn tattoos.

Even though I haven't personally gone through some of these characters stories, someone I know has. Each pain is different, yet it all shares the underlying fact: we are human, and we need to be loved.

I want the message of "Tell yourself you're beautiful" to be tattooed in the hearts and minds of every man, woman and child in the world. It starts within yourself, accepting you and all your scars. There can never be any real judgment, because each of us has dealt with the cards we were handed. The wonderful fact is we can change our circumstances and grow from the way we were raised to become whoever we want to be.
Tell yourself you're beautiful, because you're beautiful.

lyrics

Beautiful
By Joy Villa 2014

This song is for the girl
who’s got no home
she ran away young
cuz she didn’t know how
she didn’t wanna get hurt anymore
she cut herself when dad got drunk

her momma didn’t love her
and her daddy didn’t want her
And nobody wanted listen to her

this song is for the boy
who couldn’t man up
he got beat up
cuz he wasn’t tough enough

he wanted to impress the girls
so he drew a bunch of tattoos on

And he joined a gang
started stealing stuff
head all messed up
but he didn’t feel tough

no he didn’t feel tough

tell yourself you’re beautiful
you're beautiful
tell yourself you're beautiful
you're beautiful
tell yourself you're beautiful, you’re beautiful

this for the Momma
gave away her baby
daddy in jail
credit cards calling

burned her friends
and lost her job
and fell into a funk

her daddy didn’t want her
and her mommy didn’t love her
and nobody wanted to listen to her

this is for the man
who’s trying to stay a man
in a world of lies
pushed to the outside
made a choice
pressured to hide
they tell his he’s despised

tell yourself you’re beautiful
you're beautiful
tell yourself you're beautiful
you're beautiful
tell yourself you're beautiful, you’re beautiful
